Why Gold Is Called XAU in Trading

XAU is the ISO 4217 code used for gold in financial systems, with one XAU representing one troy ounce of fine gold. The “X” marks a non-national code category, while “AU” comes from the chemical symbol for gold, derived from Latin aurum. In XAUUSD, USD is the quote currency: the price is US dollars per troy ounce.

Troy ounce versus everyday ounce

Precious metals use the troy system. One troy ounce is approximately 31.1035 grams, heavier than an avoirdupois ounce (about 28.35 grams). Converting a gold price into price per gram requires dividing the per‑troy‑ounce quote by approximately 31.1035.

Other metal codes

The same ISO framework uses XAG for silver, XPT for platinum and XPD for palladium. The code identifies the standardized precious-metal unit; a broker symbol may add a quote currency, suffix or product variant that changes contract conditions.

Common misunderstandings

  • XAU is not a gold-mining company ticker in the XAUUSD pair.
  • The ISO unit does not mean the CFD trader owns an ounce.
  • One quoted ounce is not the same as one broker lot.
  • XAUUSD and XAUUSD247 are separate instruments despite sharing the XAU code.
  • Gold price per gram must be converted from the troy-ounce quote.
